Chicago, Ill. - Utah State's women's tennis team continued its momentum from a strong fall season by opening up the spring season with a 5-2 win over Chicago State on Friday in Chicago.

"I was so proud of our effort tonight against a very strong Chicago State team," said first-year head coach Sean McInerney. "We played with tremendous energy and got a big win for our program. Now we have to see if we are ready to be a winning team and duplicate this effort tomorrow morning."

The Aggies opened up doubles play with a quick win by the team captains, junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry. The duo topped Chicago State's Marnie Perez-Ochoa and Gema Bolado Yusta, 6-1. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranks Davis and Sperry as the sixth best doubles tandem in the mountain region.

Chicago State bounced back as Kirsa Utech and Karen Emeralda defeated the duo of freshman Cassidy Branstine and sophomore Amber Stuhlmann, 6-1. Shortly after, the doubles team of freshmen Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley captured the doubles point with a 7-6 win over Carynne Lloyd and Faith Huckabee.

Singles play opened up with Utah State holding a 1-0 edge in the dual match. Guensler fired out of the gate with a straight-sets win over Perez-Ochoa, 6-0, 6-3, to give USU a 2-0 lead.

Davis then added her own straight-sets win with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Utech in the number one singles position to give USU a 3-0 lead in the dual match.

Turley recorded her first dual match win as an Aggie after a 7-5, 6-2 straight-sets win against Emeralda. Turley's win clinched the dual match win for Utah State by extending the lead to 4-0.

Coaches decided to finish out the matches being played, where Huckabee defeated freshman Katie Sweet, 6-1, 6-2, to make the dual match score 4-1 in favor of the Aggies.

Sperry's match went to three sets, where she won the tie-breaker to give Utah State an insurance point. Sperry defeated Yusta 6-0, 6-7, 10-5. Lloyd defeated Branstine 6-4, 6-4 to end the match 5-2 in favor of the Aggies.

The Aggie women are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 against South Dakota in Chicago at 8 a.m. (MT).
