Aggie Women's Tennis Sweeps Valparaiso, 7-0, Sunday To Stay Undefeated

CHICAGO, Ill. - Utah State's women's tennis team swept Valparaiso, 7-0, Sunday in Chicago to win all three of its weekend dual matches and start the season 3-0 for the first time in school history.
The Aggies opened up doubles play with an 8-1 win by the tandem of junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry over Valparaiso's Kristin Zakiewicz and Kaitlyn Hamel at the first doubles position. Sophomre Amber Stuhlmann and freshman Katie Sweet, whose brother Matt is on the Utah State men's tennis team, followed up with an 8-2 victory over Angelina Goheen and Michele Fredlake at the third doubles position to clinch the doubles point. The freshmen duo of Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley lost a close match, 8-6, to Megan Barthels and Paige Heuer at the second doubles position.
In singles play, with the Aggies up 1-0 in the dual match, Turley started fast and earned a straight-sets victory against Barthels, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 singles spot. Then, Sperry won her own straight-sets match against Zakiewicz, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 2 singles spot. Davis clinched the dual match win with a 6-0, 6-1, straight-sets win agianst Hamel in the No. 1 singles spot to give USU a 4-0 lead.
With the match clinched, Sweet won her match in straight sets, as she beat Morgan Paras 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 singles spot. Sophomore Ashley Stuhlmann defeated Fredlake in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 singles spot, while freshman Cassidy Branstine completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Heuer in the No. 3 singles spot.
The Aggies are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 6, when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho, to face Idaho State. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. (MT).
