LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's tennis team (5-0, 0-0 MW) defeated the Weber State Wildcats by a final score of 6-1 in what was the Aggies first home match of the season. Utah State extended its school-record winning streak to start a season to five, as it matched its entire win total from 2012-2013 in just five matches.

"I think we competed hard," said first-year head coach Sean McInerney. "We didn't quite play as well as we have been earlier, especially in Chicago, but I do think that we stuck with our goals. Our goals are to compete every single point, every single match, be very consistant and out-work our opponent, and we did that."

The Aggies opened up the dual match with a sweep in doubles. The freshman tandem of Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler won their match against Thais Kurer and Nittaya Phonharath, 8-1, in the second doubles position. Next, junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win against Agata Bachanek and Kristi Elmer in the first doubles position. Finally, sophomore Amber Stuhlmann partnered up with freshman Cassidy Branstine for an 8-3 win against Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick in the third doubles position.

The dual match moved into singles play with the Aggies holding a 1-0 lead, and Sperry won her match in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-2, against Tanner at the No. 3 spot to give USU a 2-0 lead. Then, Davis won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Bachanek at the No. 1 spot. Weber State cut into the Aggie lead as Kurer handed Turley her first singles loss of the year in a 6-2, 7-6 match at the No. 4 spot. With USU up 3-1 in the dual match, Guensler won her match at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, against Elmer to clinch the match for the Aggies.

Utah State won the final two singles matches, as Branstine won at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-2, against Annika Karlsen, and freshman Katie Sweet won at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0, against Phonharath to make the final score 6-1 in favor of the Aggies.

Utah State women's tennis is back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 when the Aggies travel to Moscow, Idaho to take on former Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
