Utah State Women's Tennis Victorious in Saturday Doubleheader

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Utah State women's tennis (6-5) was victorious in its doubleheader on Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz., as the Aggies defeated Grand Canyon (4-7), 4-3, and Mesa CC (1-3), 7-0.

"We had a really solid road win against a good Grand Canyon team," head coach Sean McInerney said. "We played and competed as a team and took a good step forward today. We are looking forward to returning home and finally playing a home match again against a very talented Washington State team."

In the first match of the day, USU sophomore Hannah Jones and freshman Sasha Pisareva never dropped a game to win at the No. 3 doubles spot, 6-0, against GCU freshmen Martina Lo Pumo and Autum Prudhomme. USU senior Maggie O'Meara and junior Jenna Kane clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot against GCU senior Lana Rinaldi and sophomore Emilia Occhipinti. Utah State senior Sabrina Demerath and redshirt freshman Alexandra Taylor faced GCU freshman Valentina Mokrova and sophomore Celina Buhr at the No. 2 spot, but the match would end unfinished due to the action on the other courts.

Grand Canyon evened the match when Jones lost, 1-6, 2-6, at the No. 3 spot against Occhipinti. Sophomore Rhoda Tanui put the Aggies back on top with a straight-set victory at the No. 2 spot against Rinaldi, 6-2, 6-4. Pisareva won, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot against Lo Pumo to put USU up 3-1. Taylor lost, 4-6, 5-7, to senior Kylie Waschuk at the No. 6 spot, and Demerath lost, 4-6, 3-6, to Mokrova at the No. 4 spot to tie the match up 3-3. The contest came down to the No. 5 spot, where sophomore Lucy Octave faced Buhr. Octave won the first set, 6-3, but lost, 1-6, in the second. Octave clinched the win after a 6-3 victory in the third set, giving the Aggies the 4-3 victory.

In doubles against Mesa CC, all three USU doubles tandems swept their opponents 6-0. O'Meara and junior Jenna Kane won at the No. 1 spot against freshmen Sala Yoshida and Cindy Anders. Taylor and Demerath won at the No. 2 spot against freshmen Audra Spargo and Stephanie Alsman. Pisareva and sophomore Sophia Haleas won at the No. 3 spot over the MCC duo of Camacho and Mitrica.

The women only dropped one game moving into singles play as Demerath, Jones, Taylor, Haleas and Kane all posted straight-set victories, holding their opponents at love, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. O’Meara posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles over Anders.

The Aggies will have an almost two-week hiatus before hosting Washington State (7-1) in Logan on Thursday, March 1, at 5 p.m.
