Women's Tennis Falls At Utah
Feb. 20, 2004
SALT LAKE CITY - Lindsey Bennion's third-straight number one singles victory wasn't enough as Utah State dropped its match with Utah, 5-2, in women's tennis action here tonight. With the win Utah improved to 4-3, while USU fell to 1-4.
USU fell behind early as it dropped all three doubles matches. The Aggies' closest doubles match was at the number three spot, Jill Smith and Lauren Monson took the Ute duo of Alder/Jackson the distance before falling 8-6. USU lost the number one and number two doubles matches 8-4 and 8-2, respectively.
Bennion improved to 3-2 on the year as she recorded a straight-set win against Utah's Sheri Esrock, 6-4, 7-6 (2), to open singles play. The Aggies' only other singles win on the night came at the number six spot by Lauren Monson. Monson, playing in her first singles match of the spring, recorded the 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory.
"We had a slow start in some of our matches," said head coach Christian Wright. "We were able to get some of the momentum back in singles, but we had a tough time getting everything back after losing the doubles point."
USU stays in Salt Lake City this evening and plays Nevada at Utah on Saturday. The match begins at noon.
