SEATTLE, Wash. - Utah State's women's tennis team (7-1, 0-0 MW) opened up a two-match weekend with a 6-1 win over former Western Athletic Conference foe Seattle in Washington on Friday.

"This is the best we have played as a team all year," said head coach Sean McInerney. "Our energy and effort was tremendous against a very solid Seattle team on their home courts. I am really proud of this team, and it feels good to be 7-1 heading into a big match against a very talented Gonzaga team."

The Aggies opened up doubles play with a win when the team of freshmen Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley defeated Seattle's Anna Lambert and Sarah Lucas, 8-2 at the first doubles position. Then, junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Ashley Stuhlmann earned the dual match's doubles point with a 8-3 win over Corinne Wurden and Kristen James at the third position. Rounding out doubles play, the team of freshman Cassidy Branstine and sophomore Amber Stuhlmann won a close match to Barbara Carey and Kelli Woodman, 8-5, at the second position.

With the Aggies holding a 1-0 lead in the dual match, Davis opened up singles play with a quick, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Lambert at the No. 1 spot. Then, freshman Katie Sweet gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead with a win against Wurden, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot. Turley clinched the match for the Aggies with a straight sets triumph over Carey, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.

Branstine pushed the Aggie lead to 5-0 with her own straight sets win at the No. 4 spot against Gabriella Weissmann, 6-2, 6-2, before Lucas put Seattle on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Amber Stuhlmann at the No. 5 spot. Guensler ended the dual match with a straight sets win against Woodman, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot to make the final score, 6-1.

The Aggies look to improve their record to 8-1 on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Gonzaga at 6 p.m. (MT) in Seattle.
