SEATTLE, Wash. - Utah State's women's tennis team (7-2, 0-0 MW) fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 4-2, Saturday night to split the weekend's matches, 1-1. The Aggies are currently 2-2 on their season-long 10-match road stretch.
"We got completely outplayed today; they were more aggressive and played with tremendous energy," said head coach Sean McInerney. "We did a good job battling back to make it close at 3-2 with two matches left, but we couldn't get it done. They deserved to win and are playing extremely well. We will learn from this weekend heading into Mountain West play."
The match opened with Gonzaga taking the doubles point. The USU tandem of sophomore Amber Stuhlmann and Cassidy Branstine were defeated by Katie Edwards and Alexandra Tallas, 8-4, at the third position. Then, Aggie freshmen Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler lost to Melanie Yates and Franziska Koehler, 8-4, at the second doubles position to give Gonzaga the doubles point. Junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperrywere tied in their match, 6-6, when the coaches ended it.
Singles play began when Turley lost her match at the No. 4 spot to Yates, 6-1, 6-1. Then, Samantha Polayes defeated Sperry, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. The Aggies started to rally when Davis won her match in straight sets over Kylie Peek, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot, and Guensler triumphed in her match over Edwards, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
With Gonzaga leading 3-2, Branstine lost her match by default due to a sprained ankle, giving Gonzaga the 4-2 win. Freshman Katie Sweet's match ended unfinished as the Bulldogs played to clinch.
The Aggies are back on the road when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to face Loyola Marymount on Saturday, March 1, and then open up MW play with a match against UNLV on Sunday, March 2. Both matches are slated for 10 a.m. (MT).
