March 1, 2011
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis team defeated in-state foe Weber State on Tuesday, 5-2, at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club. With the win, USU improves its record to 8-3 and has won five of its last six matches.
USU was able to get things started right with a sweep in doubles action and put the Aggies out to an early, 1-0, lead over the Wildcats. In the second position of doubles play for USU, sophomores Kristina Voytsekhovich and Jaclyn West allowed only one game to be scored by WSU, in an 8-1, victory. Utah State has been able capture the early momentum by winning the doubles point in its last four matches, all of which have led to a team win.
USU was able to win four of the six singles matches, with all four of the wins coming in straight-set victories over WSU. Senior Hailey Swenson turned in another impressive outing in the number two slot for the Aggies, allowing only one game to get past her, as she defeated Brittany Moore, 6-0, 6-1. Another standout performance for Utah State came in the fourth position by junior Romina Nedakovic, who swept Michelle Warwick in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0. This is the fourth consecutive match where the Aggies have had at least one singles player serve up a sweep over their opponent. Solidifying the middle of the rotation for USU was sophomore Kristina Voytsekhovich, who made quick work against Annika Karlsen in the No. 3 singles slot, 6-2, 6-0.
Utah State women's tennis will not see the court again for over three weeks when the team travels to the West Coast for a two-match road trip. The Aggies will take on San Francisco on Thursday, March 24, followed with a bout against conference foe San Jose State on Friday, March 25.
