March 1, 2014
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Two wins by freshman Nini Guensler were not enough as Utah State's women's tennis team (7-3, 0-0 MW) fell on the road to Loyola Marymount, 4-2, on Saturday in Las Vegas a day before the Aggies' Mountain West opener.
The match opened up with doubles where Guensler partnered up with fellow freshman Lexi Turley for the first win of the match, an 8-3 win over Ellie Grossman and Lauri Mueller at the second position. LMU evened up the doubles score with an 8-4 win by Reka Rohonyi and Lisa Piller over sophomore twin sisters Amber and Ashley Stuhlmann at the third position. Utah State's tandem of junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry fell just short of taking the doubles point when Miya Jin and Jessica Perez won the final doubles match, 8-4, at the first position.
The dual match moved to singles play with LMU leading 1-0, where Grossman defeated Amber Stuhlmann, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot to put LMU up 2-0. Then, Guensler won her match in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot over Mueller to put the Aggies on the board, 2-1. Shortly after, however, Sperry lost to Jin at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 7-5, before Ashley Stuhlmann won her match in straight sets over Piller, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot. With LMU leading the dual match 3-2, Turley couldn't hold on as she lost a hard-fought match to Rohonyi in three sets, 2-6, 6-5, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, and LMU took the dual match by a final score of 4-2
Davis' match at the No. 1 spot was left unfinished, as LMU played to clinch.
The Aggies are back in action on Sunday as they compete in their first MW conference match against UNLV in Las Vegas. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
