Utah State Women's Tennis Ends 10-Match Road Swing With A 6-1 Win At Weber State Wednesday
March 19, 2014
OGDEN, Utah - Utah State's women's tennis team (9-6, 0-2 MW) tamed the Wildcats of Weber State with a 6-1 win in Ogden on Wednesday. This is the second win for the Aggies over the Wildcats this season after a similar 6-1 win in Logan on Feb. 11.
"We had a great effort on the road," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "I was really proud of the team and how hard we played on the road yet again. It is very hard to beat a team 6-1 two times in one year, and we managed to do it. Weber State played very well, and we are happy to get our ninth win of the season."
The match started in doubles play where the Aggies swept all three matches. First, junior McKenzie Davis teamed with sophomore Amber Stuhlmann for an 8-3 win over Nittaya Phonharath and Thais Kurer at the second position. Then, the team of sophomores Kallie Sperry and Ashley Stuhlmann clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win against Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick in the third position. The Aggies finished off the doubles portion with a win at the first position by freshmen Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler over Agata Bachanek and Kristi Elmer, 8-7, at the first position.
Then, the teams turned to singles play, where the Aggies immediately extended their lead. Sperry made quick work of Tanner in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot, while Turley finished off Kurer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot. Then, Davis clinched the win for the Aggies by earning the fourth point of the match with a straight-sets win over Bachanek, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot.
The match continued where the Wildcats put a point on the board as Warwick defeated Amber Stuhlmann in a close, three-set battle, 3-6, 7-5, 11-9, at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Katie Sweet got a point back for the Aggies with a win in a tight match against Phonharath, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, at the No. 5 spot. Guensler finished the Aggies' day with a three set victory at the No. 2 spot against Elmer, 6-4, 6-7, 10-4, to make the final score 6-1.
The Aggies will return to the courts on Thursday, March 27, against Montana State in Logan. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
