LOGAN, Utah - In a match that was very close despite the final score, Utah State women's tennis fell short of their first Mountain West win, as New Mexico (12-7, 1-1 MW) defeated the Aggies (10-8, 0-4 MW) by a final score of 6-1 on Sunday at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.

"I think we played pretty well," said USU assistant coach Jaci West. "We came out and we really wanted to compete, and I think that's what we did. Doubles went okay; the energy was better. In singles, we came out and fought, and that's all that we could ask for."

The match started with doubles, where USU lost the doubles point for the first time since March 14 against Boise State. The Aggies' freshman tandem of Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley dropped their match against Natasha Smith and Dominique Dulski, 8-3, at the second position. Then, junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry fell to Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers, 8-5, at the first position. Sophomore Amber Stuhlmann and freshman Katie Sweet also competed in doubles, but their match was left unfinished as UNM had clinched the doubles point.

In singles, Davis put the Aggies on the board with a straight-sets win over Bezdickova, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 Spot. However, USU would lose the final six singles matches while keeping most of them very close. Guensler lost to Blankers, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot, Turley fell after three close sets to Meredith Hopson, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot, and Sweet fell to Rachana Bhat, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot to make the score 4-1 for UNM.

The dual match ended after two more singles contests, where Sperry fell in a heartbreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot, and Branstine lost a very close match, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, for a 6-1 final score.

The Aggies continue their homestand on Thursday, April 3, when Montana travels to Logan. First serve is set from 11 a.m. and tentatively scheduled to be held at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
