LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis (11-8, 0-4 MW) defeated the Montana Grizzlies (10-6, 5-0 Big Sky) by a final score of 4-3 on Thursday at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. The 11th win is the most in one season by USU since the 2009-10 team won 11 matches.

"Getting our 11th win feels really good, and all the hard work is starting to pay off," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "Traditionally, we have struggled against Montana, so getting some revenge on those losses feels good."

Utah State started the match by taking the doubles point. The tandem of freshmen Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley started doubles play with a quick 8-2 win over Ashley Mackey and Maddy Murray at the third position. However, the Grizzlies would get one back at the second position as Sasha Carter and Laurence Pelchat defeated sophomore Amber Stuhlmann and freshman Katie Sweet, 8-4. Utah State's top pair of junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry clinched the doubles point with a dominant 8-2 win over Haley Driver and Precious Gbadamosi at the first position.

In singles play, the Aggies got off to a quick start as Davis won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Driver at the No. 1 spot. It was Davis' 15th singles win on the season. With USU up 2-1, Montana put a point on the board as Pelchat defeated Turley, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. However, Utah State won the next two matches and clinched the team win. Sperry defeated Gbadamosi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot, while Guensler won her match in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. In the second set, Guensler rallied from being down, 2-5, to take five straight points and the victory.

"This was a great win for our porgram against a very good Montana team that is currently 5-0 in their conference," McInerney said. "We are starting to play the style that gives us a chance to compete against good teams."

The two teams played out the match, and Sweet fell to Mackey, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot, and Murray defeated freshman Cassidy Branstine, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot to make the final score 4-3.
