Utah State Women's Tennis Ties School Record For Wins After 4-1 Rout Of Northern Arizona On Sunday
April 6, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - On a day where two program records were tied, Utah State women's tennis (12-8, 0-4 MW) easily defeated Northern Arizona, 4-1, to gain momentum going into the final weekend of the regular season. The 12 wins ties the 2004-05 squad that recorded a school record number of wins.
"We're ecstatic about getting our 12th win, which makes us 12-4 in non-conference, which was above our goal," said first-year USU head coach Sean McInerney. "I think for this group, as young and inexperienced as we are coming into this season, to tie the university record of 12 wins is something I would never have thought we'd be able to do at the beginning of the year. But we have really worked hard and banded together and developed very quickly as a team that has figured out how to beat good teams. Northern Arizona's a good team, so this was a great 12th win for us. We're excited to get back to Mountain West action."
The match began in doubles where the duo of freshmen Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler quickly set the tone with a dominating 8-0 win against Jordan Denesik and Tatum Rochin at the third position. Then, junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry partnered together for an 8-2 win at the first position against Hailey Rochin and Emelia Box. The final doubles match was left unfinished.
In singles, Davis tied a school record with her 16th dual match win this Spring. Davis posted a straight-sets win at the No. 1 spot over Johanna Vang, 6-2, 6-0, to tie the mark set by Courtney Anderson in 2005-06. Then, Sperry finished off her own straight-sets win against Box, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Northern Arizon put its only point on the board when freshman Katie Sweet fell in a close match to Hailey Rochin,, 6-4, 6-4. However, Turley won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Sarah Maria Spruch to clinch the victory for Utah State, 4-1. The final two singles matches were left unfinished.
Next up for the Aggies is a pair of MW road matches when they travel to Colorado State and Wyoming on April 11 and 13, respectively. First serve against the Rams is slated for 2 p.m., while the Wyoming match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
