FRESNO, Calif. - Utah State's women's tennis (13-10, 1-6 MW) season came to an end with a loss in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament to Nevada, 4-0, on Wednesday in Fresno, Calif., at the Sierra Sport and Racquet Club.

"It was a disappointing match today," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "We competed but did not play with the desperation and fight needed to survive in this tournament. Hats off to Nevada for playing a smart and high-energy match against us. I was happy with how McKenzie (Davis), Nini (Guensler) and Katie (Sweet) played in singles against very good players. They played some of their best tennis, which is how it has to be at the conference tournaments. I was proud of their effort."

The match started with doubles play. First, sophomore Amber Stuhlmann and freshman Katie Sweet fell to Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley, 8-3, at the second position. The Aggies evened the doubles score at 1-1 when the team of freshmen Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler defeated Monika Magusiak and Caroline Konigsfeldt, 8-1, at the third position. However, Nevada took the doubles point as junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry could not hold off Michelle Okhremchuck and Sheila Morales Hidalgo and lost, 8-4, at the first position.

The match then moved to singles play, where Nevada extended its lead. Sperry fell in two sets to Hidalgo, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot, before Turley fell to Legendre, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 position. Nevada clinched the dual match when Amber Stuhlmann dropped her match against Magusiak, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot. The final three singles matches were left unfinished because it was tournament play.

The Aggies end the season with a school-record 13 dual match wins in what was McInerney's first year at the helm of the program. Davis also posted a school-record 17 dual match wins this spring, breaking Courtney Anderson's previous record of 16 set in 2005-06.

Utah State's men's and women's tennis teams will hold a year-end banquet on Monday, April 28 at the Alumni House on the campus of Utah State University at 7 p.m. (MT).
