USU Women's Tennis Completes Play At BYU Invitational

Contact: Phil Garner (435) 797-2066PROVO, Utah - Richelle Ferguson led USU's women's tennis team Saturday as she defeated teammate Courtney Anderson to win their draw's consolation final at the BYU Invitational. Jill Smith, Lindsey Bennion and Carolyn Stephens also had victories for the Aggies in extra consolation play.
Ferguson and C. Anderson were coming off convincing victories in the semifinals over Weber State's Haley Hawkins and Utah's Janessa Jackson respectively. The first set was tightly contested with Ferguson winning by only one break 6-4. Ferguson took control in the second set though and won easily 6-1. Ferguson finished the Invitational with a 2-1 singles record while C. Anderson finished 1-2.
Smith had the only other singles victory for the Aggies Saturday as she won her extra consolation match 6-2, 6-3 over Weber State's Maria Bublick. Smith finished the Invitational with a 1-2 singles record.
The other win for the Aggies came from the doubles tandem of Bennion and Stephens as they defeated Weber State's Hawkins and Alexandre Ilie 8-5. Bennion and Stephens finished with a 1-2 record in doubles play.
USU's next tournament will be the Rolex Regional Oct. 22-26, at Salt Lake City, Utah.
