SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Richelle Ferguson led the way for the USU women's tennis team as she opened up the Rolex Invitational ITA Regional Championships with a decisive straight set victory here Wednesday.

Ferguson, a senior, had the lone victory for the Aggies Wednesday as she dropped only one game in defeating Kelly Morgan of Air Force 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round of the singles qualifying draw. It was the second time in the last three matches that Ferguson defeated her opponent while losing only one game in the match. In the round of 32 Ferguson fell to Brittany Brown of Kansas in three sets. After dropping the first set by one break 4-6, Ferguson came back strong and took the second set 6-2. Ferguson was put away in the third set, which in the Invitational is treated as a set tiebreaker, 1-0[4]. Ferguson won the singles consolation bracket in her only other meet this year at the BYU Invitational last month.

Carolyn Stephens, the only returning Aggie to compete in last year's Invitational, fell to Aline Opala of New Mexico State in the opening round of the singles qualifying draw 6-3, 6-2. Stephens, the only other Aggie senior, will continue competition Thursday as she joins doubles partner and teammate Lindsey Bennion for opening round doubles competition at 8 p.m. Bennion will open up her singles competition in the singles main draw Thursday at 10 a.m.

The USU men's tennis team is also in competition at the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Results were not available Wednesday evening. The men will continue competition Thursday.
