Utah State Women's Tennis Earns First Win of the Season, Tuesday

LOGAN, Utah -- Despite a couple of heartbreaking losses, the Utah State women's tennis team came away with a win, beating Weber State 5-2, Tuesday afternoon. The duo of junior Jaci West and freshman McKenzie Davis opened doubles competition with an 8-5 win over Brittiny Moore and Ashley Tanner. Junior Romina Nedakovic and senior Kristina Voytsekhovich followed with a quick sweep of Thais Kurer and Carly Lloyd, (8-0). Seniors Brianna Rowland (Harris) and Monica Abella wrapped up doubles action in a hard-fought win over Michelle Warwick and Nittaya Phonharath, (8-7), as the Aggies took an early 1-0 lead. In singles action, West got things started with a two-set win over Moore (6-2, 6-0). Voytsekovich fought hard, but could not pull out of her slump in time and fell to Tanner, (4-6, 7-5, 9-11). Davis defeated Annika Karlsen in two sets, (6-2, 6-1), while Nedokovic beat Warwick (6-3, 6-2). In an easy two sets, Abella defeated Phonharath, (6-0, 6-0). Senior Julie Tukuafu won her first set, but ended up with the loss after a super-tiebreaker, (7-6, 5-7, 8-10). "I was proud of the effort," said head tennis coach Christian Wright. "It's something to build on, and it's good to get that first W under the belt." This weekend, the Aggies head to Bozeman, Mont. for a dual-meet. They will take on the University of New Mexico at noon on Friday, Feb. 3, then play host Montana State on Saturday at 9 a.m. (MT).
