LOGAN, Utah - Junior McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) has been named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4, as selected by the conference office and announced Wednesday.
"Mckenzie did a great job leading our team this past weekend," said head coach Sean McInerney. "She played very smart and moved extremely well. I am really proud of our effort to kick off our spring season."
During the week, Davis went 6-0 as she guided the Aggies to their first 3-0 start in school history with wins against Chicago State, South Dakota and Valparaiso. Against the Cougars, Davis posted a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-0) and teamed with sophomore Kallie Sperry for a 6-1 win at the first doubles position. Against the Coyotes, Davis notched a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-0) and teamed with Sperry for a 6-2 win at the first doubles position. In the third and final match of the weekend against the Crusaders, Davis notched another straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1) and teamed with Sperry for an 8-1 win at the first doubles position.
This is the first Mountain West honor for Davis, and her fourth conference honor overall, as she won the Western Athletic Conference player of the week twice in her freshman season and once in her junior season.
Thomas Tenreiro from Boise State was named the men's tennis player of the week.
The Aggies travel to Pocatello, Idaho, to compete against the Idaho State Bengals on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
