Utah State Women's Tennis Falls to San Francisco in Day One of Weekend Action
March 23, 2012
LOGAN, Utah – Any momentum gained during the first part of the Utah State women’s tennis team’s dual match with San Francisco, Friday, was not enough to propel them to a win, falling 4-3 to the Dons. With the loss, the Aggies fell to 5-6 on the season. Doubles action had the match starting on a high note for the Aggies, winning the point and coming close to USU sweep over USF. Junior Jaci West and freshman McKenzie Davis started the day off with a win over Julie Wartenburger and Blair Reed, (8-3). Junior Kristina Voytsekhovich and senior Romina Nedakovic followed, defeating USF’s Melinda Akerbrant and Alana McMahon, (8-4). Senior Brianna Rowland (Harris) and freshman Kimberly Watts put up a fight, but ended up falling to Milica Tanovic and Yurie Hashiguchi, (8-7). Singles action proved a bit tougher for the Aggies, who let frustration and stress over matches get the best of them. In the No. 1 position, West had a hard time climbing out of the hole, falling to Wartenburger in two sets, (7-5, 6-3). At No. 2, Davis had the opposite experience and defeated Akerbrant in straight sets, (7-6, 6-3), while Voytsekhovich fell to Tanovic, (7-6, 6-3). Nedakovic had the toughest fight of the afternoon, but was defeated by Hashiguchi in three sets, (7-6, 4-6, 7-6), while Rowland (Harris) fell to McMahon, (6-3, 6-4). Senior Monica Abella had a tough first set, but fought through a super tie-breaker to earn a win over Reed, (1-6, 6-3, 10-7). The Aggie women are back in action Saturday, March 24 as they take on Western Athletic Conference rival Louisiana Tech. This is the first WAC match for USU and the second for LTU. Action will get underway at 10 a.m. (MT) at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
