Utah State Women's Tennis Opens Conference Play with 6-1 Win Over Louisiana Tech, Saturday

LOGAN, Utah – In its first Western Athletic Conference match of the season, the Utah State women’s tennis team came out on top with a 6-1 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 6-6 on the season, with a 1-0 WAC record. LA Tech fell to 9-4, ending a four-match winning streak and setting them back to 0-2 in the WAC.
The match got underway with doubles play, and Utah State earning the point. Junior Jaci West and freshman McKenzie Davis maintained their hold of the No. 1 position, defeating Elne Barnard and Anna Zurek, (8-3). Senior Romina Nedakovic and junior Kristina Voytsekhovich followed with a win over Vivian ten Dolle and Maartje de Wit, (8-5). Freshman Kimberly Watts and senior MonicaAbella wrapped up doubles competition with a loss to Laura Fernandez and Alena Erofeyeva, (8-3).
The Aggies continued their momentum with a near-sweep of singles action to win the match. West defeated Fernandez in two close sets, (7-6, 7-5), while Davis took down ten Dolle, (6-3, 6-2). Voytsekhovich beat in straight sets Barnard, (6-4, 6-0), and Nedakovic also dominated Erofeyeva in two sets, (7-6, 6-2). With a win guaranteed for Utah State, the final two matches went to super tie-breakers. Abella was defeated by de Wit, (2-6, 6-4, 10-4), while senior Julie Tukuafu put up a fight for a win over Zurek, (7-5, 3-6, 11-9).
USU tennis action continues on Monday, when the women will conclude their home stand by hosting No. 74 Santa Clara. Action will get started at noon at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
