April 2, 2012
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis player McKenzie Davis has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 1, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
Davis, a freshman from Salt Lake City (Cottonwood HS), helped the Aggies to two victories last week. The team defeated No. 74 Santa Clara (4-3) at home on Monday, followed by in-state rival Weber State on the Road (5-2) on Tuesday.
Davis won three of her four matches last week to get the team wins. Against the Broncos, Davis posted a three set win at No. 2 singles (6-7, 6-4, 7-6 [16-14]) and teamed with junior Jaci West for an 8-7 (8-6) win at the No. 1 doubles position. Against the Wildcats, Davis lost at No. 1 singles in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 4-6), but teamed with West for an 8-7 win at the first doubles position to help the Aggies claim the doubles point.
The Aggies are currently 8-6 overall and 1-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. Individually, Davis is 12-2 in singles play this spring, losing just last week and in February to nationally-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV. She is also 12-2 in doubles action with West.
Utah State is back on the road this week as they head to the islands of Hawaii for three matches in three days. Action will get started Thursday as they play Hawaii-Pacific. The next two days will be taken over with WAC matches as they take on Hawai'i on Friday and San Jose State on Saturday.
Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:

MEN'S BASKETBALL - Junior forward Kyisean Reed (Palmdale, Calf.) had 15 points and seven rebounds in Utah State's 70-67 loss to Mercer in the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Reed was 6-of-8 from the field, including four dunks, and 3-for-3 at the free throw line.
SOFTBALL - Junior pitcher Mandy Harmon (Las Vegas, Nev.) tossed her second complete game shutout in WAC play in leading Utah State to a 4-0 win against Nevada in the series finale Saturday. In USU's 4-0 win, Harmon fanned five hitters, allowing only two hits to the 26 batters faced, and also delivered an RBI sacrifice fly. Harmon finished the week with a 1-2 record and a 5.00 earned run average as she allowed 20 hits in 21.0 innings pitched, while striking out 10.
