Utah State Women's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season With Two Mountain West Road Matches This Weekend
April 10, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis (12-8, 0-4 MW) will look for its first Mountain West win as it travels to Colorado State (3-9, 0-3 MW) on April 11 for a match at 2 p.m., and then to Wyoming (7-7, 1-1 MW) for its regular-season finale at 10 a.m. While a win against either school would be USU's first MW win, it would also set a school record for wins in a season with 13.
Utah State is led by junior McKenzie Davis, who has a 16-2 record this Spring at the No. 1 spot and is looking for a school-record 17th win. Davis is also instrumental in doubles with partner sophomore Kallie Sperry, as the duo owns a 10-4 record during dual match play. The Aggies have three other players with double-digit singles wins, as freshmen Nini Guensler has 12, Sperry has 11 and freshmen Lexi Turley has 10. Guensler and Turley have 11 wins in doubles as a tandem.
Colorado State is currently on a five-match losing streak, most recently with a 7-0 loss to Air Force on April 6. The Rams are led by Natalie Heffron with three wins at the No. 1 spot, while Maddie Buxton and Mollie Cooper both have three wins playing in multiple spots.
Wyoming is led by three players with seven wins including Christa Gecheva, Veronica Popovici and Silviya Zhelyazkova. Popovici also leads the team with a 2-0 record in singles during conference matches. In doubles, the Cowgirls have five wins from three different tandems, as Alma Espinosa and Gecheva partner together, Dorottya Jonas and Alena Vasileva form a duo and Popovici and Jessica Parizher work together.
Following the two road matches, USU heads to the MW Tournament in Fresno, Calif., starting on April 23.
