April 23, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis player McKenzie Davis earned all-Mountain West honors, as selected by MW head coaches and announced at the MW Tennis Tournament banquet Wednesday night after the first day of tournament action.
"McKenzie has played tremendously this spring, and she really deserves to be recognized as one of the best players in the conference," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "This is a great conference, and to make the all-conference team is a huge achievement. I am very proud of her leadership and improvement throughout the spring."
The junior set a school record with 17 dual match wins this spring, surpassing the old mark of 16 set by Courtney Anderson in 2005-06. Davis also led the Aggies to a school record 13 dual match wins, as well as USU's first MW win. Davis posted a 3-3 record in MW dual matches while playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot.
This is Davis's second career all-conference honor, after earning second-team all-Western Athletic Conference honors her freshman year.
San Diego State's Laura Antonana Iriarte was named MW Player of the Year, while New Mexico's Lizette Blankers and San José State's Gaelle Rey shared MW Freshman of the Year honors. Overall, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San José State and UNLV had two singles players and one doubles tandem earn all-MW honors. Air Force, Boise State and Wyoming join USU with one singles player, while Boise State and Wyoming added a doubles team, as well.
Utah State concluded its season earlier Wednesday with a 4-0 loss to Nevada in the first round of the MW Tournament. The Aggies end the season with a school-record 13 dual match wins in what was McInerney's first year at the helm of the program. Davis also posted a school-record 17 dual match wins this spring, breaking Courtney Anderson's previous record of 16 set in 2005-06.
Utah State's men's and women's tennis teams will hold a year-end banquet on Monday, April 28 at the Alumni House on the campus of Utah State University at 7 p.m. (MT). The cost is $15, and includes a catered dinner. Contact assistant coach Jaci West at 435-797-8754.
