April 26, 2012
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - With a 4-0 loss in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, held at New Mexico State, the Utah State women's tennis team has concluded its season. The sixth-seeded Aggies were up against third-seeded Idaho in the opening round of the tournament Thursday, but came away empty-handed. As the first match of the tournament, USU fell 4-0 to the Vandals. The match was called once Idaho had secured the win, leaving three singles matches unfinished. The loss puts the Aggies at an even 10-10 record on the season, 2-2 in WAC play. With the win, the Vandals improve to 19-7 overall and 3-1 in league play. This was Idaho's first WAC Tournament win since 2007. In doubles play, the No. 2 and No. 3 positions finished first, clinching the point for the Vandals, and stopping the No. 1 match early. At No. 2, junior Kristina Voytsekhovich and senior Romina Nedakovic were defeated by Molly Knox and Sophie Vickers, (8-3). Senior Brianna Rowland and junior Julie Tukuafu were at No. 3, falling to Alejandra Lozano and Beatriz Flores, (8-3). Moving to singles play, Idaho continued to overpower the Aggies, winning three matches and clinching the overall win. At the No. 1 position, Davis fell to Victoria Lozano, (7-5, 6-3). Voytsekovich fell to Knox, (6-0, 6-0), while Tukuafu was defeated by Alejandra Lozano, (6-2, 6-2). West was left midway through her second set, down against Sanz, while Nedakovic was also down to Vickers in her second set. Rowland had lost her first set to Flores, when the match was called at the beginning of her second. The Aggie men will have their turn in tournament action as the No. 6 seed, Friday, when they take on No.1 Hawai'i at noon.
