USU Women's Tennis to Open Mountain West Championship Against San Diego State
The Aggies begin Mountain West Championship action against San Diego State tomorrow

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis will open the 2017 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship as the No. 8 seed against No. 9-seeded San Diego State on Thursday, April 27, at 11 a.m. (MT). The four-day event is hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev.

"We are very excited for the opportunity to compete against San Diego State on Thursday," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "They have traditionally been a very strong program, and we are looking forward to the challenge."

Utah State (12-10, 2-3 MW) ended the regular season with a pair of home wins against Idaho (4-0) and Boise State (5-2) to build momentum heading into the tournament. The Aggies are led in dual matches by freshman Hannah Jones with a 15-5 singles record. Overall, Jones has 28 singles wins this year, tying McKenzie Davis for the single-season school record. Senior Nini Guensler is 11-8 in dual matches playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot, while freshman Lucy Octave is 10-10 spending most of her time playing at No. 3 singles. In doubles, the duo of Guensler and junior Sabrina Demerath are 12-1 in dual matches and have won five-straight decisions. The rest of the Aggie squad has combined to make 15 different doubles pairings during the season.

San Diego State (5-17, 0-4 MW) is entering the tournament having lost eight-straight matches and 11 of its last 12 overall. The Aztecs are led in dual matches by Kennedy Davis with a 9-11 record in singles playing mostly at the No. 2 spot, while Paola Diaz is 9-11 spending most of her time at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. In doubles, the Aztecs look to the duo of Davis and Mia Smith with a 6-5 record, while Olivia Larsson and Alli Valk are 6-6. This will be the first meeting between San Diego State and Utah State on the tennis courts.
