May 15, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis coach Sean McInerney announced Thursday the addition of one more signee for the 2014-15 season, completing the class with the addition of Maggie O'Meara.
"Maggie is going to be a tremendous college player. She is highly intelligent and has an extremely good work ethic. She wants to reach new levels and I am confident that she will be a major contributor to our program and be a big part of reaching our goals as a championship level program," USU head coach Sean McInerney said.
O'Meara, a native of Austin, Texas attended the Austin Tennis Academy. She is a 4-star recruit and considered one of the Top 150 in the country. O'Meara joins Sabrina Demerath, Erin Freeman and Meghan Lyall as the newest Aggies on the women's tennis team.
"I feel that USU has everything in place to make a championship program and being apart of something this exciting has always been a dream of mine. It has world class training facilities, great athletic and academic staff, and not to mention beautiful scenery. I am so happy to be joining the Aggie family," O'Meara said.
O'Meara's coach at the Austin Tennis Academy tennis coach was Texas two-time NCAA Champion, Lucie Schmidhauser.
"I am excited for Maggie to commit to a collegiate program that is focused on player development and excellence not only on the tennis court, but also in the classroom. I feel confident that Maggie will continue to grow under the tutelage of Coach McInerney, and I am excited about the future of the Aggies' program and Maggie's role in helping the program reach new levels of excellence," Schmidhauser said.
Utah State's women's tennis team set a school record with 13 wins on the season, posting a 1-5 MW record in its first season in the league. Junior McKenzie Davis set a school record with 17 dual match singles wins this spring on her way to all-Mountain West honors. Davis broke the previous record of 16 set by Courtney Anderson in 2005-06. The Aggies also recorded their inaugural Mountain West victory with a 5-2 win at Colorado State on April 11. Sophomore Kallie Sperry and freshmen Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley all posted a double-digit dual match win total, giving USU four players with 10+ wins in a season for the first time since 2010-11.
