LOGAN, Utah - Behind 15 kills from Rebecca Fuchs, Weber State topped Portland, 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 27-25, 25-19) Friday evening in the Utah State Invitational sponsored by Gossner Foods, which continues all day on Saturday.

Fuchs was the lone Wildcats in double-digit kills, while Audrey Biggs added nine kills for WSU, which improved to 1-0 and is coached by former USU head and assistant coach Tom Peterson.

Portland had two players in double-figure kills, as Autumn Wedan and Emily Liger shared team-high honors with 10 each. The Pilots fell to 0-2 on the season and in tournament play after losing to host USU in three sets Friday morning in the opening match.

The Wildcats ended the match with a .190 hitting percentage (45-22-121), hitting .265 (14-5-34) in the match-clinching fourth set. The Pilots hit .144 (48-31-118) for the match, hitting a match-best .294 (17-7-34) in the third set.

Caitlin Penrod dished out a match-high 26 assists for Weber State while Laurel Bodily added 15 digs. Dama Cox posted one solo block and four block assists to lead the WSU blocking attack that totalled 10.5 total blocks.

Monica Jordan had 18 assists for Portland, while Jacky Rodriguez added 16 digs and Rachel Femling had seven block assists, helping UP to nine total blocks.

Saturday's action tips off with Portland facing Southern Utah at 9:30 a.m., followed by Weber State and Utah at Noon. The Aggies face the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah at 2 p.m., preceding the 5 p.m. match-up between the Utes of Utah against the Pilots of Portland. USU concludes action by facing Weber State at 7:30 p.m.

Southern Utah head coach Debby Nield Baker was a two-year Aggie volleyball letterwinner from 1992-93, earning academic all-Big West honors, and is a 1993 USU alum, graduating Cum Laude with a Marketing degree in 1994. She was also a volunteer assistant coach at USU during the 2000 season.

 

 

Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $1 for youth ages 3-14. The USU Athletics Ticket Office will open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Utah State volleyball tickets are available in person at the USU Athletics Ticket Office at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
