Utah Sweeps Portland Saturday To Take USU Invitational Title

LOGAN, Utah - Utah swept Portland (25-9, 25-21, 25-21) to finish out action at the Utah State Volleyball Invitational sponsored by Gossner Foods with an undefeated record and capture the team title.
The Utes went 4-0 on the weekend, and were led by Tournament MVP Erin Redd who was joined on the all-Tournament team by teammates Chelsey Schofield, Morgan Odale and McKenzie Odale. Portland went 1-3 in the tournament and placed Jacky Rodriguez on the all-Tournament team.
Utah hit .301 (47-16-103) for the match, logging a .370 (14-4-27) attack percentage in the first set. Redd notched 13 kills, while Schofield added 11 kills. McKenzie Odale distributed 41 assists, while Morgan Odale had 17 digs. Bailey Bateman registered eight block assists to go with eight kills.
Portland was limited to a .077 hitting percentage (29-21-104), led by Emily Liger's 10 kills, tying her career-high set Friday night. Ariel Usher added nine kills and Autumn Wedan tallied eight kills, while Monica Jordan dished out 14 assists. Wedan led UP with nine digs, while Rodriguez added eight digs. Bea Loper notched three block assists.
Utah was leading 9-6 before reeling off 16 of the next 19 points of the match. McKenzie Odale had three service points before sister Morgan served up nine points, including chalking up a pair of aces of the serving variety. Schofield ended the set with a kill for Utah's 25-9 first set win.
In the second set, Utah pulled away from a 10-7 lead with five unanswered points off the serving of McKenzie Odale for a 15-7 lead, capped by back-to-back kills by Shelby Dalton. Portland closed to 18-17 after a kill by Wedan, but couldn't tie it up and Utah pulled away for the 25-21 set win after another Schofield kill.
The Pilots took a 12-9 advantage in set three after a kill by Usher, but the Utes retook the lead, opening up a 17-14 advantage after a kill by Redd. UP battled back to tie it at 21-all after a Utah service error, but a kill by Bateman started a 4-0 streak that Redd and Schofield ended with consecutive kills.
Host Utah State wraps up USU Invitational action against Weber State at 7:30 p.m. WSU head coach Tom Peterson is a former USU head and assistant coach.
Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $1 for youth ages 3-14. The USU Athletics Ticket Office will open at 9 a.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Utah State volleyball tickets are available in person at the USU Athletics Ticket Office at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
