McArthur Ties Career-High With 25 Kills in Utah State's Five-Set Win Against Weber State Tuesday

OGDEN, Utah - Senior All-American Liz McArthur tied her career-high with 25 kills and junior Laurel Bodily posted a career-high 30 digs to lead Utah State's volleyball team to a five-set win (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13) here against in-state rival Weber State Tuesday night.
Utah State, who has now won each of its last three matches after starting the year with a 1-3 record, improves for 4-3 with the win. Weber State falls to 0-6 with the loss. Overall, USU is now 33-19 all-time against the Wildcats including 12 wins in its last 13 matches, and eight straight victories on the road.
McArthur, an outside hitter from St. George, Utah (Snow Canyon HS) posted her fifth double-double of the season and 17th of her career as she added 13 digs in the match to go along with three block assists and one service ace. Bodily, a junior libero from Idaho Falls, Idaho (Idaho Falls HS) recorded her 27th career double-digit dig match, including her seventh-straight this season with her 30 digs. Overall, it is the third time in her last four matches that Bodily has posted at least 20 digs.
Junior outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) added 14 kills and a career-high 16 digs for Utah State, while sophomore middle blocker Nicole Gneiting-Theurer (Las Vegas, Nev.) tied her career-high with seven block assists. Freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) added seven kills and four block assists and hit a season-high .600 (7-1-10) in the match. Freshman setter Paige Neves (Otto, Wyo.) also played well for the Aggies as she finished with 15 digs and four block assists to go along with a season-best 50 assists.
Bethany Wray had 26 kills and 11 digs for Weber State, while Dama Cox added 13 kills.
Utah State began the match by scoring seven of the first 10 points and never trailed in the first set as it coasted to the seven-point win. USU hit just .067 (10-8-30) in the opening set, but held Weber State to a .000 (8-8-32) hitting percentage. McArthur led USU with five kills in the opening set.
Utah State held the early lead in the second set and was up 12-9 before Weber State went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-12 lead en route to its 25-23 win. The Wildcats hit .122 (12-7-41) in the second set as compared to a .029 (10-9-34) hitting percentage for the Aggies.
Utah State once again had the quick start in the third set scoring the first five points, but Weber State slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually tied it at 23-23 only to see USU score the final two points for the win. Both teams played well in the third set as Utah State hit .220 (13-4-41) and Weber State hit .209 (15-6-43). McArhur once again led USU in the third set finishing with seven kills.
Weber State was the aggressors in the fourth set and held an early 9-5 lead before USU rallied to tie it at 16-16. The Aggies eventually took a 23-22 lead, but the Wildcats answered with three straight points to force a fifth set. WSU hit .209 (15-6-43) in the fourth set and Utah State hit .200 (14-7-35) as there were 10 ties and seven lead changes.
Utah State scored four of the first five points in the fifth set and held on for the two-point win as it hit .217 (9-4-23) and Weber State hit .172 (.9-4-29). McArthur was once again USU's go-to-player as she finished with five of the team's nine kills in the set.
Overall, Utah State hit .147 (56-32-163) in the match and Weber State hit .149 (60-31-194). The Aggies also had one more service ace (6-5), 4.5 more team blocks (15.5-11.0) and 25 more digs (89-64) in the match, while the Wildcats finished with seven more service errors (12-5).
Utah State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when it faces Oregon State in the first day of competition of the Long Beach State hosted Baden Classic at 6 p.m (MT).
