Utah State Spikers Lose At No. 22 Long Beach State In Three Sets

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) had 14 kills in Utah State's three-set loss (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) at 22nd-ranked Long Beach State Saturday in its second of three matches at the LBSU hosted Baden Classic.
Utah State, who has now lost consecutive matches after winning its previous three, falls to 4-5 on the season with the loss. Long Beach State improves to 5-3 with the win.
Junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) added eight kills and hit .375 (8-2-16) in the match for Utah State, while junior libero Laurel Bodily finished with nine digs.
Caitlin Ledoux had 12 kills for Long Beach State, while Haleigh Hampton and Janisa Johnson each finished with 10.
Utah State led 10-9 in the first set before Long Beach State went on a 7-1 run to go up 16-11. USU got back within two at 23-21 following a kill from Sorensen, but the 49ers scored the final two points to post the 25-22 win. LBSU hit .163 (15-8-43) in the opening set and USU hit .171 (10-4-35).
Utah State scored four of the first five points in the second set and led 20-16 only to see Long Beach State go on a 9-2 run to finish the set and post the three-point win. The 49ers hit .128 (14-9-39) in the second set as compared to a .147 (11-6-34) hitting percentage for the Aggies.
Long Beach State never trailed in the third set as it .412 (17-3-34) and Utah State hit .242 (13-5-33).
Utah State finished the match with a .186 (34-15-102) hitting percentage and Long Beach State hit .224 (46-20-116). LBSU also had 13 more digs (49-36), while USU had three more service aces (5-2), but also had eight more service errors (8-0). Both teams had 8.0 team blocks in the contest.
Utah State will conclude the tournament on Saturday evening against SMU at 6 p.m (MT).
