OGDEN, Utah – Utah State ran its winning streak to seven against Weber State with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-16) victory in Ogden on Tuesday night. The win moves the Aggies to 7-4 on the year.
"In-state matches always carry extra emotion and playing against a good friend adds another level of complexity," USU head coach Grayson DuBose said. "I thought our team paid attention to the details of the scoting report put together by Sammi Stuart and that made a big difference."
Senior outside Lauren Anderson led the Utah State attack with 14 kills, hitting .435 (14-4-23) as the Aggies hit .292 (47-16-106) on the night. Redshirt freshman setter Jaysa Funk recorded 41 assists and coupled that performance with 11 digs, marking her fifth double-double of the year. Senior middle Carly Lenzen hit for a season-high .588 with 12 kills on 17 attempts and only two errors, while also leading the Utah State block with six. Junior libero Tasia Taylor led every player on the back row with 14 digs, her 10th double-digit dig outing of the 2017 campaign.
Weber State opened the match with a kill, but Utah State countered with a three-point run, capped by a block by Lenzen and senior right side Kayla DeCoursey, to take a 3-1 lead and never looked back. The Wildcats tied the match at 12-12, but back-to-back points by the Aggies kept the lead in Utah State’s favor and back-to-back points at the end of the set gave USU the first set, 25-21.
Utah State used a 10-3 run during the second set to grow a one-point lead, 5-4, into an eight-point advantage, 15-7, capped by a block by Lenzen and Funk. Weber State only came as close as four down the stretch, fighting off a pair of USU set points at 24-18 and 24-19. A final kill by Lenzen punctuated the set for the Aggies on the next rally, 25-20.
Utah State broke a 2-2 tie as the third set began with a four-point run, taking a 6-2 lead after a kill by Anderson and a service ace by Lenzen. The margin grew close to double figures when Anderson recorded her 14th kill of the night, giving the Aggies an 18-9 lead later in the frame. Back-to-back kills by freshman outside Gabbi Shumway gave Utah State match point at 24-15 and a final kill by DeCoursey gave Utah State the match 25-16.
Weber State hit .147 (35-19-109) during the match and was led by Amanda Varley with 11 kills.
Utah State will be back in action on Friday night, wrapping up its in-state slate at Southern Utah at 7 p.m.
