Utah State Volleyball Loses At UC Irvine in Four Sets

IRVINE, Calif. - Senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) had 17 kills and eight digs in Utah State's four-set loss (25-23, 20-25, 10-25, 17-25) to UC Irvine here Friday night. USU falls to 4-8 on the season with the setback and UCI improves to 5-4 with the win.
Marisa Bubica and Aly Squires both had 13 kills for UC Irvine, while Shannon Fleming added 12 kills and eight blocks.
Utah State rallied from an early 12-7 deficit in the first set to post the two-point win as it .182 (15-7-44) and UC Irvine hit .160 (14-6-50). White led USU with seven kills in the first set.
Utah State began the second set by scoring five of the first six points only to see UC Irvine rally as the Anteaters scored seven of the next 10 points en route to the five-point win. UCI hit .395 (17-2-38) in set two and USU hit .257 (12-3-35).
UC Irvine jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage in the third set and then used a 7-0 run midway through as it coasted to the 25-10 win. The Anteaters hit .556 (15-0-27) here and the Aggies hit .143 (8-5-21).
Utah State held an 8-7 lead in the fourth set, but UC Irvine went on a 7-0 run and never trailed again to post the eight-point win. UCI hit .136 (13-7-44) in the final set and USU hit .111 (10-6-36).
Utah State finished the match with a .176 (45-21-136) hitting percentage and UC Irvine hit .277 (59-15-159). UCI also had two more service aces (6-4) and 1.5 more team blocks (10.0-8.5), while USU had one more dig (67-66).
Utah State will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when it plays at Cal State Fullerton at 8 p.m. (MT).
