McArthur Records 17 Kills in Utah State's Four-Set Loss at San Jose State Wednesday

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior All-American Liz McArthur had 17 kills as Utah State's volleyball team lost at San Jose State in four sets (21-25, 12-25, 25-15, 24-26) Wednesday. USU falls to 4-4 in Western Athletic Conference play and 9-12 on the season with the loss, while SJSU improves to 3-5 in league play and 8-13 overall with the win.
McArthur, an outside hitter from St. George, Utah added eight digs and four blocks for Utah State, while junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) finished with 11 kills and a career-high nine digs.
Savanah Leaf had 13 kills and Kiely Pieper added 15 digs to lead San Jose State.
San Jose State began the match on a 4-1 run before Utah State responded with a 7-4 run to tie it at 8-8. The Spartans immediately answered with a 6-1 run and led by five at 20-15. The Aggies fought back one more time with a 5-2 run to get within 22-20, but the Spartans finished the set by scoring three of the final four points for the 25-21 win. SJSU hit .224 (15-4-49) in the opening set and USU hit .089 (11-7-45).
Utah State had an early 3-1 advantage in set two and later led 5-2 before San Jose State went on a 14-1 run and coasted to the 25-12 win. SJSU hit .185 (9-4-27) in the second set and limited USU to a negative .233 (5-12-30) hitting percentage.
Utah State jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the third set and later used a 5-0 run to turn a 13-12 advantage into an 18-12 lead en route to its 10-point win. USU hit .161 (10-5-31) in the third set and held SJSU to a negative .050 (8-10-40) hitting percentage. McArthur led Utah State with five kills in the third set.
There was 20 ties and eight lead changes in the fourth set that included an 8-2 run by San Jose State to turn a 9-9 tie into a 17-11 Spartan lead. USU fought back and used a late 6-1 run to tie it at 24-24 only to see the San Jose State score the next two points for the win. SJSU hit .333 (17-5-36) in the fourth set as compared to a .400 (17-5-30) hitting percentage for USU.
Utah State finished the match with a .103 (43-29-138) hitting percentage and San Jose State hit .171 (49-23-152). SJSU also had three more service aces (6-3) and five more service errors (9-4) in the match, while USU had 11 more digs (66-55) and eight more team blocks (15-7).
Utah State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 21 when it plays at No. 8 Hawai'i at 10 p.m. (MT).
