Aggie Spikers Lose In Three Sets at Hawai'i

HONOLULU - Shay Sorensen had seven kills to lead Utah State's volleyball team in a three-set loss at No. 8 Hawai'i (25-16, 25-21, 25-11) late Friday. USU falls to 9-13 on the season and 4-5 in Western Athletic Conference play with the loss, while UH improves to 20-1 overall and 8-0 in league play with the win.
Sorensen, a junior opposite side hitter from North Ogden, Utah added five digs and two block assists in the match for Utah State, while senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) finished with six kills and 10 digs. Junior libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) added a match-best 16 digs.
Emily Hartong had 15 kills and Jane Croson recorded 14 digs to lead Hawai'i.
There were seven ties early on in the match including at 9-9 before Hawai'i went on a 10-2 run to post the nine-point win. UH hit .294 (16-6-34) in the opening set and USU hit .000 (5-5-25).
Hawai'i began the second set by scoring seven of the first 10 points and later led by eight at 19-11 before Utah State rallied to get within one at 22-21. However, the Rainbow Wahine answered USU's run by scoring the final three-points for the 25-21 win. UH hit negative .083 (6-9-36) in set two, but held USU to a negative .029 (8-9-34) hitting percentage.
Utah State had the early momentum in the third set as it scored six of the first eight points before Hawai'i rallied to tie it at 8-8. UH later turned a 10-10 tie into an 18-10 advantage courtesy of an 8-0 run and it coasted to the 14-point win. The Rainbow Wahine hit .235 (12-4-34) in the final set as compared to a negative .100 (6-9-30) hitting percentage for the Aggies.
Utah State finished the match with a negative .045 (19-23-89) hitting percentage and Hawai'i hit .144 (34-19-104). UH also had three more service aces (6-3) and two more team blocks (8-6), while USU had two more digs (42-40) and two more service errors (9-7).
Utah State will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 27 when it hosts New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
