LOGAN, Utah - Senior All-American Liz McArthur had 18 kills in Utah State's five-set loss (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 26-24, 9-15) at Fresno State Saturday to finish its regular season with a 12-16 record, including a 7-7 mark in the Western Athletic Conference. FS also ends league play with a 7-7 record and improves to 13-14 on the season with the win.

Trailing two sets to none, Utah State rallied to force a fifth game and trailed by just one at 9-8 before Fresno State finished the match with a 6-1 run for the win. FS hit .474 (11-2-19) in the final set as compared to a .118 (5-3-17) hitting percentage for USU.

McArthur, a senior outside hitter from St. George, Utah added nine digs, three service aces and a career-high seven block assists in the match for Utah State, while junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) finished the match with 14 kills. Junior middle blocker Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) added 10 kills and junior middle blocker Alyssa Everett (Perry, Utah) had three kills and tied her career-high with nine block assists.

Korrin Wild had a match-high 27 kills to go along with 10 digs for Fresno State.

Fresno State led 6-3 early on during the first set before Utah State rallied to go ahead 12-10. With the set tied at 20-20, FSU scored five of the final six points to notch the win. The Bulldogs hit .214 (16-7-42) in the opening set as compared to a .132 (10-5-38) hitting percentage for the Aggies.

Utah State held the early lead in set two and was up 14-7 before Fresno State rallied with an 11-2 run for an 18-16 advantage and the Bulldogs went on to post the 25-19 win. The Bulldogs hit .211 (16-8-38) in the second set and the Aggies hit .138 (8-4-29).

Fresno State led early in the third set and was up 8-5 before Utah State went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-9 advantage. From there USU never trailed again as it posted the five-point win. USU hit .227 (10-5-22) in the third set and FS hit .125 (13-9-32).

 

 

Utah State carried its momentum into the fourth set as it took an early 8-5 lead and later used an 8-2 run to take a commanding 19-11 advantage. Fresno State fought back to tie the set at 24-24 only to see USU score the final two points for the win. USU hit .211 (14-6-38) in the fourth set and FS hit .176 (13-7-34).

Utah State finished the match with a .167 (47-23-144) hitting percentage and Fresno State hit .218 (69-33-165). FS also had 13 more digs (62-49), while USU had three more team blocks (16.5-13.5) and one more service ace (7-6). Both teams finished with 11 service errors.

Utah State will return to action on Monday, Nov. 21 when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the 2011 WAC Tournament. USU is the defending WAC Tournament champions having defeated Nevada (3-1), New Mexico State (3-2) and No. 3 Hawai'i (3-0) in the championship match a year ago.
