Aggies Spikers End 2011 Season With Three-Set Loss To Fresno State In Quarterfinals Of WAC Tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior All-American Liz McArthur concluded her Aggie career with seven kills and five digs as Utah State lost to fifth-seeded Fresno State in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-10) here Monday in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament.
Utah State, who entered the tournament as the fourth seed, finishes the year with a 12-17 record after going 7-7 in WAC play.
Korrin Wild had 17 kills and Christina Lee posted 18 digs for Fresno State.
Utah State and Fresno State combined for six ties and two lead changes early on in the first set before the Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 advantage. USU fought back to within one at 14-13, but Fresno State answered with a 7-3 run to lead 21-16 and went on to post the seven-point win. FS hit .385 (16-6-26) in the opening set and USU hit .226 (11-4-31).
Utah State scored the first two points of the second set and later led 10-8 before Fresno State scored five of the next six points to lead 13-11. USU tied the set at 14-14 only to see FS go on an 8-2 run en route to its six-point win. The Bulldogs hit .389 (18-4-36) in the second set and the Aggies hit .125 (8-5-24).
Fresno State began the third set by scoring five of the first six points and later led 19-4 as it cruised to the 25-10 win. Fresno State hit .371 (17-4-35) in the final set and held Utah State to a negative .029 (5-6-35) hitting percentage.
Utah State finished the match with a .100 (24-15-90) hitting percentage and Fresno State hit .381 (51-14-97). The Bulldogs also had 17 more digs (41-24), three more service aces (5-2) and 0.5 more team blocks (6.0-5.5), while the Aggies had three fewer service errors (7-4).
