LOGAN, Utah - Utah State volleyball will play the first of two in-state opponents this week when the Aggies travel to Ogden on Tuesday to face Weber State at 7 p.m.
Utah State leads the all-time series with the Wildcats, 36-19, and has won each of the last six contests. The teams last met in the season finale for USU last season, a 3-0 sweep for the Aggies in Logan. During the match, Utah State had three hitters in double figures as Lauren Anderson led the way with a team-high 18, followed by Kaylie Kamalu-Smith with 11 and Kayla DeCoursey with 10. DeCoursey hit a team-best .571 (10-2-14) during the match as the Aggies hit .363 (46-13-191) as a team.
This season, Anderson leads Utah State with 154 kills, averaging 4.28 per set to rank second in the Mountain West. Anderson is also the most efficient outside for the Aggies this season, hitting .272 (154-49-386), and is second on the team in digs, totaling 87 and averaging 2.42 per set. Junior libero Tasia Taylor leads the USU back row with 174 digs on the year, and ranks second in the Mountain West with 4.83 digs per set.
Weber State is 1-8 during its 2017 campaign with its lone victory coming against Northeastern in five sets. The Wildcats are led offensively by senior outside Amanda Varley, totaling 103 kills this season and averaging 3.03 per set. She is followed by junior outside Andrea Hale with 95 kills, averaging 2.79 per set. Freshman setter Ashlyn Power directs the attack with 250 assists, averaging 8.06 per set, while WSU hits .155 (335-152-1177) as a team.
The Wildcats’ strength is in their block as Weber State leads the Big Sky Conference with 2.79 blocks per set, paced by sophomore middle Hannah Hill-DeYoung with 44, averaging 1.33 per set. Senior libero Thamires Cavalcanti leads the WSU back row with 149 digs, averaging 4.38 per set.
Weber State head coach Jeremiah Larsen, now in his third year, was an assistant at Utah State during the 2011-2014 seasons before taking the helm in Ogden.
