LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's volleyball team will play its first of three matches this week on Tuesday when it hosts in-state rival Brigham Young inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 p.m.

Utah State is 4-6 on the season after defeating Weber State (3-2) on the road and losing to Oregon State (3-0), No. 22 Long Beach State (3-0) and SMU (3-1) at the LBSU hosted Baden Classic last weekend. The Aggies are led by senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur who is hitting .138 and averaging 3.58 kills, 2.60 digs, 0.50 blocks and 0.17 service aces per set. Junior outside hitter Josselyn White is hitting .177 and averaging 2.89 kills, 2.61 digs, 1.21 blocks and 0.21 service aces per set, and junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen is hitting .160 and averaging 2.33 kills, 0.98 blocks and 0.62 digs per set. As a team, Utah State is hitting .158 on the year as compared to a .159 hitting percentage for its opponents.

Brigham Young is 9-2 on the season, 2-0 on the road and 6-0 away from home after winning at Utah (3-0) in its last match. The Cougars are led by sophomore opposite side hitter Jennifer Hamson who is hitting .338 and averaging 4.58 kills, 2.42 digs and 0.92 blocks per set. As a team, BYU is hitting .246 on the season and its opponents are hitting .122. BYU returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 14-16 and finished in fourth-place in the Mountain West Conference with a 9-7 record.

Utah State is 16-40 all-time against Brigham Young, but has won seven of the last 12 matches played in the series including each of the last two overall. The last time the two teams met was on Sept. 14, 2010 in Provo with USU winning in five sets and the last time they met in Logan was on Sept. 1, 2009 with USU winning in five sets. The last time BYU won a match in the series was on Aug. 29, 2008 in Provo in three sets and the last time it won in Logan was on Sept. 12, 2006 in three sets. Overall, USU has won three of the last four meetings between the two teams in Logan.

 

 

Utah State is 28-18 (.609) versus the state of Utah during the last 12 years including a 14-5 (.737) home record. Under sixth-year head coach Grayson DuBose, USU is 12-10 (.545) versus teams from the Beehive State, including a 6-4 record at home.

Utah State is also 90-42 (.682) at home in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum during the last 12 years, which includes a 23-8 (.742) record against non-conference opponents.
