Aggie Volleyball Hosts Boise State Wednesday In First USU Home Mountain West Event
Sept. 17, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State volleyball is the first Aggie team to host a Mountain West event when USU takes on Boise State on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. (MT) at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. In addition to it being the Aggies' first Mountain West match, it is also USU's 2013 home-opener after playing their first 10 matches away from home.
After Wednesday's match, the Aggies and Broncos turn around and play each other on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Boise at BSU's Bronco Gym.
Wednesday is the first home Mountain West contest hosted by Utah State, as USU is in its first year in the MW after eight years in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggie football team was the first team to play a MW event when they played at Air Force on Sept. 7, but Aggie volleyball is the first to host a MW contest.
The Aggies are 6-4 on the year after completing regular-season tournament action with a 5-4 mark. USU is coming off a 1-2 finish at the Duke Invitational, falling to South Carolina in four sets on Sept. 13 and getting swept by host Duke that night, before bouncing back to sweep Liberty on Sept. 14. The Aggies posted a .463 (48-4-95) attack percentage in the win over Liberty, tying its previous highest mark from nearly 11 years to the day, with a .463 (60-10-109) outing vs. Northeastern on Sept. 13, 2002.
Overall, USU is hitting .209, averaging 11.71 kills per set. The Aggies also average 11.00 assists per set, along with 1.15 aces per set. Defensively, Utah State averages 2.29 blocks per set, limiting the opposition to a .199 attack percentage. USU adds 14.54 digs per set.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Orr (Thatcher, Ariz.), leads USU with 3.51 kills per set, adding a .216 (144-59-394) attack percentage. Orr also averages 2.46 digs per set, posting a team-leading five double-doubles on the season. She adds 0.59 blocks per set.
Fellow junior, middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah), spearheads the Aggies' attack with a .247 (75-29-186) hitting percentage with 1.83 kills per set, and is second on the team with 1.07 blocks per set. Senior middle blocker Alyssa Everett (Perry, Utah) tops the team with a 1.10 blocks per set average.
Junior setter Paige Neves (Otto, Wyo.) dishes out 9.41 assists per set, adding 2.35 digs per set. While averaging 0.74 kills per set, Neves does have a .469 (25-2-49) attack percentage. Junior libero Ashlan Rogers-Court (Highland, Utah) leads the team with 3.88 digs per set, and is tied with Neves for the team lead with nine service aces each.
USU trails BSU, 18-15, in the overall series. The Aggies won the last meeting with the Broncos, when they were former WAC foes, sweeping BSU on Nov. 4, 2010 in Logan. Utah State has won the last nine meetings in a row in Logan, while Boise State has won the last two meetings in Boise, but Utah State has won five of the last eight meetings there. BSU won the first 14 meetings in the series, but the Aggies have won 14 of the last 17 meetings with the Broncos.
Boise State is 5-4 on the year after going 2-1 in their own Courtyard Marriott Bronco Classic over the weekend. BSU opened the weekend with a five-set loss to in-state rival Idaho on Sept. 12 before bouncing back to beat North Texas, 3-1, on Sept. 13 and sweep Sacramento State on Sept. 14.
