LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women’s volleyball will begin a three-match road trip this week, opening the swing at Air Force on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Aggies enter the match fresh off of three-set sweep against Boise State on Tuesday night, where USU hit .306 (41-11-111), its best hitting percentage in league play this season. All three outsides logged double-digit kills during the match, as senior Rachel Gale-Hammond led the way with a season-high 15 kills, followed by senior Lauren Anderson with 13 and senior Kayla DeCoursey with 12. The trio were all one dig short of a double-double, finishing with nine, while junior libero Tasia Taylor recorded a match-high 23. Taylor’s digs were one shy of tying the all-time school record in a three-set match, and marked the eighth time she surpassed the 20-dig plateau this season.
Air Force split its matches with Fresno State and San Diego State last week, picking up its first Mountain West victory of the season over the Bulldogs, 3-2. Overall, the Falcons are 8-12 on the year, 1-5 in league play and have lost six of their last seven.
AFA is led offensively by sophomore outside Denise Ssozi and junior middle Abigail Miksch with 253 and 227 kills, averaging 3.33 and 3.07 per set, respectively. The Falcons are hitting .175 (907-491-2.383) on the year and directed by junior setter Shanleigh Conlan with 543 assists, averaging 7.44 per set.
Defensively, senior middle Piper Heineck leads the AFA block with 94, averaging 1.25 per set, fourth in the Mountain West. Freshman libero Alex King leads the AFA back row with 186 digs, averaging 2.45 per set. Overall, Air Force is last in the Mountain West in digs per set, averaging 11.51 per set.
Utah State leads the all-time series with Air Force, 6-1, and have only faced the Falcons since joining the Mountain West in 2013.
Following the match at Air Force, USU will remain on the road and open the second half of conference play with matches at Fresno State and San Diego State on Thursday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 21, respectively.
