Aggie Volleyball Grounds Redhawks In Five For DuBose's 100th Career Win
Utah State volleyball head coach Grayson DuBose became just the second coaching position in school history to reach 100 career wins after the Aggies beat the Redhawks of Seattle in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 20-18) Thursday night at a spirited Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Thursday night was also USU's Western Athletic Conference home opener, as the Aggies improve to 3-0 in WAC play for the first time since 2005.

With its five-match homestand complete, Utah State volleyball will hit the road for its first road match since Sept. 29, heading to the Pacific Northwest, playing Idaho at Moscow, Idaho on Thurday, Oct. 18 and taking on Seattle at Seattle, Wash. on Saturday, Oct. 20... Both matches are slated for an 8 p.m. (MT) first serve.
USU will be playing its first road match since Sept. 29, as the Aggies have played their last five matches at home, their longest homestand since 2000.
Overall, USU has won its last four road matches after losing its first two true road matches.
Thursday's visit to Idaho will be the Aggies' 22nd all-time visit to Moscow.
Utah State volleyball is making its first-ever trip to Seattle, as the Aggies have never played at Seattle University, nor at the University of Washington, which is located in Seattle.
Utah State will be facing Idaho for the 39th time when the teams square off on Thursday, USU's second-most played WAC series.
Saturday will be just the third-ever meeting between Seattle and Utah State, and if history repeats itself, the teams are in for a five-set battle, as the Aggies faced the Redhawks on Sept. 20 this season in Logan with USU winning in five... Before this year, the only other match-up between the Aggies and Redhawks was in 2010 at the Arizona State Sheraton Classic, where USU also won in five sets.
Now with 1,608 career assists, sophomore setter Paige Neves becomes just the ninth player in USU history with 1,500 career assists and is No. 9 on the USU career assists list.
Senior outside hitter Josselyn White enters this week with 266 career block assists, needing just one more to tie Tiffany Kitley (1996-99) for No. 9 on USU's career block assists list.

AGGIES DIGGING FOR A CURE
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Utah State Women's Volleyball team wants to help by raising money for Logan Regional Hospital Foundations's Breast Cancer Services... Pledges are now being gathered for every dig the Aggies make during their seven home matches in October... For each dig (a defensive move made to control a spiked ball) the Aggies are asking for a donation of $.25... If the Aggies dig 200 balls in the seven matches, a pledge of $.25 will result in $50.00... Half of this donation will go to the Logan Regional Hospital Foundation to assist in Breast Cancer Research while the other half will be used to support the USU Volleyball team... Pledges can be made in any amount and flat donations are also accepted and appreciated... LOOKING AT UTAH STATE
The Aggies had their five-match WAC win streak halted by a loss to UTSA Monday night, as USU was swept by the Roadrunners... Utah State is still atop the WAC standings with an 8-2 league ledger and is 13-7 overall, winning five of its last seven matches.
Utah State continues to lead the WAC overall in blocking at 3.11 blocks per set and the Aggies also are tops in the league in WAC only matches at 3.07 blocks per set... USU also is fourth in overall attack percentage (.213) and fifth in WAC only attack percentage (.201)... The Aggies' defense is second in the league overall for opponent attack percentage (.162), but leads the conference in WAC only matches (.137)... USU also is seventh in the league overall with 14.01 digs per set while ranking second in WAC only matches with 16.61 dps... With 11.52 assists per set in all matches, the Aggies are fifth overall while ranking third in WAC only matches with 11.97 aps... Utah State is also fourth in overall kills per set (12.44) and fifth for WAC only kills per set (12.89)... A 1.15 aces per set ranks the Aggies sixth in the WAC overall while they are also sixth in conference only matches with 1.06.
Senior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) is sixth in the WAC in overall kills per set (3.05) and tied for fifth in WAC only kills per set (3.31), as well as fifth for overall points per set (3.79) and fourth for conference only matches for points per set (4.04)... Sorensen has logged a double-double in eight of USU's last 13 matches, and has a team-leading nine on the season.
Senior outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) has missed a total of five matches plus part of three others in different stretches with illness... White is 10th in the WAC overall for points per set (3.31).
Redshirt-freshman middle blocker Elle Brainard (Saratoga Springs, Utah) leads the Aggies and is second in the WAC in both overall blocks per set (1.49) and conference only matches (1.47)... Brainard also is sixth in the WAC overall in hitting percentage (.322)... With 112 total blocks, Brainard is second in the league for total blocks as well also ranking second in league WAC only matches with 53 total blocks... Brainard is 13th in this week's NCAA statistics with 1.47 blocks per set.

Neves became the 12th Aggie volleyball player to reach the 1,000 career assists milestone when USU played in San Diego, Calif., and now with 1,608 career assists, Neves becomes just the ninth player in USU history with 1,500 career assists and is No. 9 on the USU career assists list... Dominique Arsenault (2003-05) holds the No. 8 spot with 1,965 assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) is second on the team and third in the WAC overall for blocks with 1.39 blocks per set, ranking third overall in the league with 104 total blocks... VanHoff is fifth in WAC only matches with 1.36 blocks per set... She also is 27th in this week's NCAA stats for blocks per set with the 1.39 bps... VanHoff, who was last week's Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, has now tallied a combined 36 blocks in her last five matches (7.2 per match/1.89 per set).
Sophomore libero Ashlan Rogers (Highland, Utah) is tied for fourth overall in the WAC in digs per set (3.80) as well as third in the WAC in conference only matches with 4.58 digs per set... Rogers also is fourth in the WAC overall in service aces per set (0.29).
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Orr (Thatcher, Ariz.) is eighth in the WAC overall for kills per set (2.88) and ninth in league matches for kills per set (3.11).
Utah State's loss to Utah Valley Tuesday night was the first time this season that USU has lost when not only winning the first two sets but also when leading in blocks and attack percentage along with hitting .300 or better... Prior to Tuesday, USU was 8-0 when winning the first two sets, 9-0 when leading in blocks and 11-0 when leading in attack percentage, as well as 1-0 when hitting .300 or better.
RUDE WELCOMING TO WAC NEWCOMERS IN FIRST HALF
USU went 5-0 against the WAC newcomers in the first half of the conference schedule, beating UTSA (3-1) and Texas State (3-0) on Sept. 13 and 15, respectively, as well as Seattle (3-0) on Sept. 20, UT Arlington (3-0) on Sept. 29 and Denver (3-2) on Oct. 6... The Aggies' win streak against the league newcomers was broken with their three-set loss to UTSA on Monday.

Utah State is 67-54 (.554) all-time in WAC play which includes a 41-20 (.672) home record and a 26-33 (.441) record on the road.

AGGIES FIFTH, BRAINARD 13th, VANHOFF 27th IN BLOCKING IN NCAA STATS
In the NCAA statistics as of Oct. 15, Utah State leads the WAC and is fifth in the NCAA statistics with 3.14 blocks per set... Washington leads the nation with 3.33 bps... Individually, redshirt-freshman Elle Brainard (Saratoga Springs, Utah) is 13th in the NCAA with a 1.51 blocks per set average, while sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) is 27th with a 1.39 bps average.
DUBOSE FOR 100 PLEASE ALEX
USU head coach Grayson DuBose earned his 100th career win with the Aggies' win over Seattle on Sept. 20, 2012... DuBose, who is in his seventh-year as Aggie head coach, has a 105-96 (.522) record, coaching his 200th career match as USU head coach vs. San Jose State on Oct. 13, 2012... With USU's four-set win at Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 17, 2011, DuBose moved ahead of former Aggie head coach Burt Fuller (2001-05) and into second-place all-time at USU for career wins... DuBose becomes just the second coaching position to reach 100 wins as Marilyn McReavy and Mary Jo Peppler hold the school record with 209 wins as they were co-head coaches from 1976-81.
AGGIES AGAINST THE WEEKEND FOES
IDAHO - Thursday is the second meeting of the season between the Aggies and Vandals, with Idaho winning the first meeting on Sept. 22 in Logan in three sets... Utah State is 17-21 all-time against Idaho, including 8-13 at Moscow... The Vandals have won the last four meetings overall, including both match-ups last season, sweeping USU in Moscow and winning in five sets in Logan... USU's last win against UI was in Moscow during the 2010 season in four sets, while the Aggies have lost the last three meetings in Logan, last earning a home win over the Vandals during the 2008 season in five sets... USU and Idaho have played 38 times, the second-most of any other WAC opponent behind the 66 meetings with New Mexico State.

Senior outside hitter Josselyn White has moved into the No. 9 spot on the Utah State career attacks list, now with 2,712, needing one more to tie Melissa Schoepf (1997-2000) for No. 8 with 2,713 attack... White has also logged 753 career kills, needing 110 more to crack the top 10 list, as Niki Conner (1995-98) has the No. 10 spot with 863 career kills.
White has also recently reached the USU top 10 for career total blocks, now at No. 9 with 294 total blocks, passing Melissa Schoepf (1997-2000) with 280... Now with 266 career block assists, White needs only one more to tie Tiffany Kitley (1996-99) for the No. 9 spot on the career block assists list... White also has 28 career solo blocks, needing nine more to reach the No. 10 spot on the career solo block list, currently held by Ingrid Roth (2002-05) with 37.
SORENSEN CHASING AGGIES' TOP 10 FOR KILLS AND HITTING PERCENTAGE
Senior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen has 747 770 kills, needing 93 to break into the career top 10 kills list as well as having a .201 career hitting percentage, needing to improve by .025 to tie for the No. 10 mark on the career hitting percentage list.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
IDAHO - The Vandals are 9-10 overall and 7-2 in the WAC, currently tied for second-place in the league standings... Idaho has won six matches in a row, the longest active win streak in the conference... The Vandals' last loss was at San Jose State on Sept. 20, as their six-match win streak started two nights later with a 3-0 win over Utah State in Logan... In its last action, Idaho won at UT Arlington on Oct. 11 and swept Louisiana Tech the next night on the road.
Idaho leads the WAC in both overall service aces per set (1.26) and league only matches per set (1.57)... UI also is fifth in the WAC overall for hitting percentage (.212), but is second in conference only matches (.240)... The Vandals are 10th overall in opponent hitting percentage (.220), but are fourth in WAC only matches (.189)... UI is sixth in both overall kills per set (12.36) and league only matches (12.80)... In assists per set, Idaho is sixth in overall matches (11.50) while ranking fourth in WAC only matches (11.74)... With 2.36 blocks per set, the Vandals are fourth in the league overall while ranking third in WAC only matches with 2.64 bps... Idaho averages 14.71 digs per set overall to rank fourth in the conference while ranking seventh in league only matches (14.86).
The Vandals are led by junior outside hitter Allison Baker, who leads the WAC in overall kills per set (4.46) as well as ranking second in league only matches (4.23 kps)... Sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Schultz is second in the league in overall attack percentage (.365) in addition to third in conference only matches (.400)... Schultz is fourth in overall blocks per set (1.22) as well as third in conference only matches (1.43 bps).
Debbie Buchanan is in her 13th season at the helm of the Vandals' program, amassing a record of 188-184.
SEATTLE - The Redhawks are 7-12 overall and 2-7 in WAC play, having lost six of their last seven... Seattle snappped a five-match losing skid with a five-set win at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 11, rallying from down two sets to one, before getting swept at UT Arlington on Oct. 13.
Seattle is ninth in the WAC in both overall attack percentage (.146) and league only hitting percentage (.148) while ranking sixth in overall opponent hitting percentage (.198) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.191)... With 11.68 kills per set overall average, SU is ninth in the WAC, while ranking eighth in league only matches with 12.07 kps... The Redhawks are ninth in the conference for both overall for assists per set (10.91) and league only matches assists per set (11.35)... SU is eighth in the WAC for overall digs per set (13.87) but is third in league matches (15.95)... The Redhawks service game is fifth in the league for overall aces (1.21 per set) as well as third in conference matches (1.27)... Seattle 10th in the WAC both overall blocks per set (1.45) and conference only matches (1.49).
Senior outside hitter Kaytlyn Dill leads the Redhawks and ranks fourth in the conference overall in kills per set (3.73) while ranking third in WAC only matches (4.03)... In overall points per set, Dill is fourth in the league overall with 4.39 while ranking second in WAC only matches (4.65)... Dill also leads the conference in service aces for overall matches (0.43 per set) while ranking second in the league only matches (0.45)... Sophomore setter Jacquie Brice is fifth in the conference for overall assists per set (9.81) while ranking third in league matches (10.32)... Junior libero Lani Beadle is third in the league overall for digs per set (3.86) while ranking second in conference only matches (4.70)... The Redhawks do not have anyone in the top 10 of the conference statistics for hitting percentage nor blocks, but junior middle blocker Allison Farley has a .217 hitting percentage and a 0.76 blocks per set average.
Shannon Ellis is in her ninth season as Seattle head coach, posting a 105-133 record... Ellis is currently on maternity leave, so assistant coach Teron Uy has been the Redhawks' acting head coach in Ellis' absence for all 19 matches so far this season.
UTAH STATE VERSUS THE STATE OF UTAH
Utah State improved to 30-20 (.600) versus the state of Utah during the last 12 years after going 2-1 against in-state foes in the opening weekend... The Aggies have a 16-7 (.696) home record against in-state foes... Under seventh-year head coach Grayson DuBose, USU is 14-12 (.538) versus teams from the Beehive State, including an 8-6 (.571) record at home.
Shay Sorensen TABBED WAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah State volleyball player Shay Sorensen was named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 10-16. This is the first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor for Sorensen.
A senior opposite side hitter from North Ogden, Utah, Sorensen averaged 4.30 kills on .296 hitting, 3.30 digs and 0.60 blocks per set in a pair of road wins at UTSA and Texas State. She posted a pair of double-doubles to lead Utah State to its first 2-0 start to WAC action since 2007. In Thursday's four-set win over UTSA, Sorensen logged 15 kills and 11 digs, adding a pair of blocks and a service ace. In Saturday's sweep at Texas State, she tallied a match-high 15 kills on a season-high .353 hitting to go with 12 digs and two blocks.
This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for a USU volleyball player since Liz McArthur earned the accolade last season on Oct. 17.
Josselyn White NAMED USU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK TWICE
Utah State volleyball player Josselyn White has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week twice this season, earning the honors on Aug. 27 and Oct. 1. This award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
White, a senior outside hitter from Smithfield, Utah (Sky View HS), was the first USU student-athlete to earn the honor this school year, getting recognized after she was named to the Utah State Invitational, sponsored by Gossner Foods, all-tournament team in the season-opener weekend as she helped USU to a 3-1 record and a second-place finish. During the tournament, White hit .278 (43-13-108) with 43 kills, 34 digs and 10 blocks. White posted a career-high .500 attack percentage (14-0-28) in the win against Portland and logged a career-high 18 digs against Southern Utah.
The senior earned it a second time this season after she led USU to a pair of Western Athletic Conference road wins over the weekend of Sept. 27 and Sept. 29, with a four-set win over Louisiana Tech on Sept. 27 and a sweep at UT Arlington on Sept. 29. She tallied her fourth double-double of the season in the win over Louisiana Tech, posting a career-high 20 digs to go with 10 kills. White added a season-high 17 kills on a .429 attack percentage (17-2-35), her third-highest of the season in the sweep of UT Arlington. For the weekend, the senior had a .338 attack percentage (27-5-65), averaging 3.86 kills per set to go with a matching 3.86 digs per set average, adding 0.43 blocks per set and 0.29 aces per set.
These are White's first two career USU Student-Athlete of the Week accolades.

UTAH STATE RANKED 10TH IN THE NATION IN BLOCKING LAST SEASON
Utah State ranked 10th in the country in blocking (2.79) last season... Individually, middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff ranked 47th in the nation in blocking (1.19), while senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur ranked 82nd in the nation in kills per set (3.72) and 98th in points per set (4.17).
UTAH STATE LED THE WAC IN BLOCKING
Utah State finished the 2011 season ranking first in the WAC in blocks (2.79), second in digs (15.05), sixth in hitting percentage (.168), seventh in kills (11.15), seventh in assists (10.38) and eighth in service aces (0.97).
RECAPPING LAST SEASON -USU-
Utah State finished the 2011 season with a 17-12 overall mark, posting an even 7-7 WAC record to tied for fourth in the conference... As the No. 4 seed, the Aggies lost to fifth-seeded Fresno State in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-10) in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament... Opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen earned second-team all-WAC honors following her junior season as she hit .202 and averaged 2.57 kills, 0.71 digs and 0.86 blocks per set... Setter Paige Neves was named to the WAC's all-freshman team in 2011 after hitting .225 and averaging 8.83 assists, 2.48 digs and 0.71 blocks... Sorensen hit .202 last season and averaged 2.57 kills, 0.71 digs and 0.86 blocks per set... Neves ranked seventh in the WAC in assists at 8.83 per set and added 2.48 digs per set as well as 16 service aces, second among the USU returners... Outside hitter Josselyn White was among the WAC leaders statistically last year as she was ninth in kills (2.73), eighth in blocks (1.01) and seventh in points (3.45) per set... Libero Ashlan Rogers averaged 2.61 digs per set as well as leading the team with 23 service aces a season ago as a freshman, while Kaitlyn VanHoff was fourth in the WAC in blocks at 1.19 per set.
