USU Volleyball Set for the Final Week of the Regular Season

Utah State’s volleyball team (15-13/7-9) will play its final two matches of the regular season this week, hosting Nevada on Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m., and then close the season at San José State on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. (MT).

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women’s volleyball remained unbeaten in four-set matches with a 3-1 victory over Nevada on Saturday afternoon, running its record in four-set matches to 6-0 on the year.

Senior Kaylie Kamalu-Smith's Career Performance leads USU to 3-0 Victory
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women’s volleyball (13-16/8-10) recorded a 3-0 victory over San José State (12-17/5-12 MW) on Saturday afternoon, highlighted by the performance of senior outside Kaylie Kamalu-Smith.

The Series with Nevada
Utah State leads the all-time series against Nevada, 22-21, and have won 11 of the last 12, including each of the last three matches. Thursday’s contest will be the first meeting between the two teams this year.

The Last Time Against Nevada
Lauren Anderson recorded a career-high 23 kills and was one of three hitters for the Aggies that logged double-digit kills, followed by outside Kaylie Kamalu-Smith with 15 and right side Kayla DeCoursey with 11 during the match on Oct. 22, 2016t. Kamalu-Smith also recorded 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Overall, Utah State hit a season-high .312 (60-17-138) during the match, including a blistering .467 (17-3-30) during the opening set.

The Series with San José State
Utah State leads the all-time series against San José State, 19-18-1, and has won six of the last seven matches. Saturday will mark the first time the teams have played this season. San José State is one of just eight programs in USU history that the Aggies have drawn a tie with.

The Last Time Against San José State
Kaylie Kamalu-Smith recorded 17 kills, hitting a career-best .625 (17-2-24) and flirted with the school record for hitting percentage in a three-set match after hitting .800 (12-0-15) over the first two sets on Nov. 19, 2016. She was followed offensively by junior outside Lauren Anderson and junior middle Carly Lenzen, each with 11 kills apiece. Senior setter Erica Moscoso finished the match with 39 kills as the Aggies had one of their most efficient matches of the year, hitting .371 (49-13-97).

400-Club
Senior outside Lauren Anderson has totaled 401 kills this season, marking the first Aggie to eclipse 400 kills in a season since All-American Liz McArthur logged 406 during the 2011 season. Anderson needs 433 kills on the year to tie for 10th all-time in a single season, matching Liz McArthur’s total during the 2009 season.

Rising in the Record Books
Taylor has already totaled 485 digs this season, seventh all-time in a single season in Utah State history. Taylor needs 18 more digs to move into sixth all-time, tying Ashlan Rogers-Court with 503 digs during the 2013 season, 21 more digs to move into fifth all-time, tying Hannah Gleason with 506 digs during the 2015 season, and 25 more digs to move into fourth all-time, tying Kelsi Peterson with 510 digs during the 2005 season.

Two of the Best Hitters in USU history
Anderson and senior right side Kayla DeCoursey both have the chance to write their names on the USU record books, carrying career hitting percentages of .247 and .239, respectively. The mark puts them at ninth and tenth, respectively, in USU history.

Senior Class
Utah State seniors Lauren Anderson, Rachel Gale-Hammond, Kayla DeCoursey and  Carly Lenzen will be playing their final match on Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center on Thursday night. Combined, the group has appeared in more than 1,100 sets and has totaled more than 1,700 kills, 1,100 digs, 650 blocks and close to 150 service aces.
