LOGAN, Utah - Utah State volleyball head coach Grayson DuBose announced Thursday that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the Utah State volleyball program.
Kaylie Kamalu (Kuh-Ma-lu) will join USU from Kaysville, Utah, while Erica Moscoso (Mo-sco-so) comes to the Aggies from Mission Viejo, Calif. Both will enroll in the fall of 2013 as freshmen and compete for the Aggies next season.
"This class will allow us to continue to build upon our success," DuBose said. "These two student-athletes have the work ethic and drive to become great and as a staff we are looking forward to working with them as we head into the Mountain West Conference."
Kamalu, is a 5-11 outside hitter who comes to Utah State from Davis (Utah) High School where she was a three-year starter. She was named to the Utah Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star Team after helping Davis to a 31-2 mark, winning the Region 1 title before losing to eventual state champion Pleasant Grove in the playoffs. This season, Kamalu averaged 3.0 kills and 3.0 digs per set, with a .267 hitting percentage. Kamalu added 0.4 service aces and 0.3 blocks per set. As a junior, Kamalu helped the Darts to the 2011 5A state title, earning first-team all-state accolades after earning honorable mention all-state honors as a sophomore. At Davis, Kamalu played with current Aggie Candace Richins. Kamalu also competed with USA Volleyball club team, qualifying for the Junior Olympic Championships for the last three years.
"We are excited about Kaylie becoming an Aggie. She is a nice volleyball player and will have an immediate impact on our program," DuBose said. "She comes from a competitive background at Davis HS and coach Lori Salvo and her club training as well, with coach Mike Daniel."
Moscoso is a 5-8 setter, who comes to Logan after a three-year starting role at Capistrano Valley (Calif.) High School. She helped lead her team to a 27-8 record, falling in the CIF semi-finals after winning the Sea View League championship following an undefeated run through league play. During the regular-season, Moscoso averaged 9.5 assists per set, adding 1.7 digs, 0.7 kills, 0.7 aces and 0.6 kills per set. Moscoso led the Cougars to two major tournament titles this year, in which she earned MVP and all-tournament team honors. She was named the team MVP for the 2011 season while being named to the South Coast League first-team.
"We are looking forward to Erica coming into our gym this fall. She will continue the tradition of strong setters we have fostered over the years," DuBose said. "She has competed at a high level in both high school and club and this training will allow her to hit the ground running as she enters Utah State."
USU is the Western Athletic Conference volleyball regular-season champion and will be the number one seed in next week's WAC Tournament, which runs Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 19-21 in San Antonio, Texas. Utah State will play Monday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. (MT) against the No. 8 seed, who will either be UT Arlington or Seattle, depending on their respective results Thursday night.
