LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (14-17, 3-3 MW) fell to Nevada, 10-6, at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field on Sunday.
Utah State 6, Nevada 10
USU carried its recent offensive surge into Sunday's rubber match but couldn't keep up with Nevada's power hitters in a 10-6 defeat.
The Aggie offense came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Kya Pratt hit a double to right field, though Nevada's outfield relay cut down sophomore outfielder
Faith Kroening's attempt to score from first. Undeterred, senior catcher/infielder
Kaylee Erickson and senior
Alex Bunton added a pair of singles, the latter driving in Pratt, before freshman infielder
Jazmin Ramirez launched a moonshot over the left field foul pole to stake the Aggies to a 4-0 lead.
Freshman southpaw
Jordyn Lish kept the Wolf Pack at bay until the top of the third inning, when a one-out rally filled the bases before Nevada cleared them with a grand slam. Utah State regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on the strength of back-to-back doubles from Erickson and Bunton and a two-out, RBI single up the middle from freshman infielder
Kate Vance.
Nevada pulled within one run in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run before taking control of the game with a five-run sixth inning. Freshman
Kendall Cochran escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, but the Aggies couldn't muster a rally in the final frame.
Utah State was led offensively by Ramirez's three-run homer, her third long ball of the season, as well as a two-hit, two-RBI day from Bunton and another two hits from Erickson.
Lish started the game in the circle and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out three batters, which tied her career high. Senior
Carly Limosnero took over, pitching 3.0 innings as she was charged with five earned runs in the loss. Senior
Rylie Pindel pitched 0.2 innings, allowing one earned run, before Cochran pitched a scoreless seventh.
